Where Obsession Meets Craft

Every Blythe doll begins as a conversation between vintage charm and modern artistry. We’re a small studio of doll makers and customizers who fell hard for those distinctive oversized eyes and pouty expressions back in 2018, when we stumbled upon a forgotten Kenner Blythe at an estate sale in Portland. That single doll sparked what would become our obsession with reimagining these 1970s icons for collectors who see dolls as something more than toys — they’re tiny canvases for storytelling.

Our workshop runs on equal parts strong coffee and the peculiar joy of transforming factory dolls into one-of-a-kind characters. Each custom Blythe that leaves our hands has been carefully rerooted with mohair or alpaca, dressed in hand-sewn pieces we source from indie designers across three continents, and given a personality through careful face-ups that can take days to perfect. We work with vintage Kenners when we can find them, but we’re just as passionate about breathing new life into modern Takara releases — because honestly, every Blythe deserves her moment.

This whole thing started because we couldn’t find the Blythes we wanted to add to our own collections. Now we create them for people who understand that sometimes the most meaningful art comes in unexpected packages — like a 12-inch doll with eyes that change color with the pull of a string. Whether you’re hunting for your first custom or you’re already deep enough in this world to have opinions about scalp types, we’re here to help you find (or create) the Blythe who belongs with you.

“The face sculpt on the Neo Blythe I received is absolutely flawless – the matte finish and subtle blush details are even better than the photos showed. She came with all four eye chips perfectly aligned, which isn’t always guaranteed with other sellers.”

Common Questions

How tall are these dolls?

Standard dolls measure approximately 11 inches (28 cm) in height. The oversized head is about one-third of the total height, with the body taking up the remaining portion. Some limited editions or special releases may have slight variations in size.

What makes the eyes change color?

A pull string mechanism located at the back of the doll’s head controls the eye color changes. Pulling the string rotates the eyes through four different colors and positions – straight ahead, left, right, and another forward-facing position. The mechanism uses small springs and gears inside the head.

How should these dolls be stored and maintained?

Store dolls in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. The joints may become loose over time but can be tightened with clear nail polish or elastic cord replacement. Regular dusting with a soft brush keeps them looking fresh. Many collectors use display cases to protect from dust and UV damage.

Can the doll’s hair be styled differently?

The hair can be gently brushed and styled using doll-specific brushes with soft bristles. Heat styling tools should be avoided as they can damage the synthetic fibers. For major restyling or color changes, many collectors prefer to reroot with new doll hair or purchase wigs specifically designed for this doll size.

Are these dolls suitable for children?

These dolls are primarily designed as collectibles for ages 14 and above due to small parts and delicate mechanisms. The eye-change mechanism and joint system require gentle handling. For younger children interested in similar dolls, there are play-line versions available with more durable construction.

What’s the difference between factory dolls and custom dolls?

Factory dolls come directly from manufacturers with original face paint, hair, and clothing. Custom dolls have been modified by artists who may carve the face, add new paint details, replace eyelashes, reroot hair, or create unique outfits. Customs often command higher prices due to the artistic work involved.
